Cult Of The Lamb (PS5) – Game Review

Introduction

Cult Of The Lamb is produced by Massive Monster and was launched on August 2022. A roguelike game that combines intense action with village management elements. This charming and chaotic two-year-old game immerses players in its own unique world in which you experience a mix of violence and cuteness that few other games can match. Deserving of nominations and awards, it represents one of the best titles currently available on PlayStation’s subscription service.

Story and Setting

If you haven’t played it yet, the story, without spoilers, is about the last lamb (your character) being sacrificed by the current gods and resurrected by a forbidden god who wants to use you. As the lamb, you act as a messiah to break free from the current religious order. Your main goal is to slash through enemies on different maps and manage a camp full of needy followers to progress in the game.

Gameplay

Roguelike games in the indie space don’t always reinvent gameplay, but that’s not a problem when you deliver a game like this. It’s simple and effective, moving seamlessly from one area to the next without feeling repetitive. The randomly generated maps and the inability to choose your weapons or powers upfront make every run a fresh challenge, as you pick upgrades randomly as you progress.

How do you level up your lamb? That’s the beauty of it. Progress isn’t tied directly to kills equaling experience and power. Instead, killing enemies earns resources for your village, which you can use to improve the lives of your followers. In turn, they help you unlock better powers and weapons. This dynamic between village management and dungeon progression is so engaging that hours fly by.

The game also has a clock, adding layers to the challenge. Your followers need to eat, sleep, and age—eventually dying—making management even trickier.

About 90% of the gameplay runs smoothly, though occasional performance drops are noticeable, particularly when the village wakes up to do "their thing".

Graphics and Sound

Like many indie games, the graphics feel reminiscent of a 2D experience similar to adventure games from the 90s. However, the artwork and music are fully up to date. The cartoonish animation style reminded me of Happy Tree Friends but with a gothic twist—is both charming and brutal. The environments are varied but not distinct enough to make you feel like you’re playing a different game in each area. The music, on the other hand, is perfectly synced to every moment, never getting repetitive. It’s like a good DJ who knows how to read the room and puts the right beat at the right time with smooth transitions.

Conclusion and Rating

Overall, this game is an addictive masterpiece. It’s easy to play, offering about 20 hours of gameplay even without aiming for the platinum trophy. For those chasing it, the challenge is solid, and you’ll likely invest a lot more time. As for the story, I still haven’t seen the end, but it’s been an incredible journey so far.
